Does the economy effect our health?
February 17, 2009
In these times of a crumbling economy, it is incredible to me that I recently read there are three industries that are expected to grow in the next year. Alcohol consumption, fast food and pacemaker implants are all expected to grow tremendously.
It is no wonder why hospital visits are on the rise. More consumers are turning to fast food because it is a cheap way to get a meal. As more and more people choose this avenue you will also begin to see a rise in all of the health related issues causing a huge snowball effect.
Along with the bad economy is an increased stress level influencing the consumption of alcohol? As recently reported, more people are drinking alcohol on a daily basis to help cope with their stress. People are also consuming more alcohol because once again it is cheaper to drink at home than it is to go out for a cocktail.
The third major growth of 2009 will be the increase in pacmaker implants. To me it is no wonder giving the other two factors as above. Afterall poor food choices and alcohol is a pretty good lifestyle that will potentially buy you a pacemaker.
If this is not a sign of the economy being in grave danger then I dont what is. Yes the stock market is terrible but when you start to see the physical impacts it has on society we have a real problem.
There are a few ways to help manage this crisis and keep you from being a statistic. One way is to watch what you order. If you choose fast food try ordering baked chicken or salad, stay away from the fried anything!!
Another way is to limit the amount of spending you do. This includes gas and major purchases, Conserve driving time or carpool.
Instead of turning to alcohol for example, try another outlet for your stress. Try going out for a walk. This is a great way to relieve stress and wil also help better your health.
With all of this going on when will it get better? I cannot answer that but I will say that a few lifestyle adjustments can go a long way.
