(Article Marketing) Harley fumes over article – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
March 31, 2009
The advertisement, published in the Sunday edition of the Times, came a week after freelancer Susanna Hamner wrote an article saying that Harley’s core customers have gotten older and are buying new bikes less often. Few are in the mood to shell out up to $20,000 or more for something that is basically a big toy, and the company, in turn, has not captured much of the younger market," Hamner wrote. Harley dealers expect about a 10% drop in new motorcycle sales this year, although it could be closer to 23%, according to Baird analyst Craig Kennison. But company executives don’t seem outwardly worried by the lackluster growth among those 35 and younger, even as the company takes steps to turn them into Harley owners, the article noted. Hamner and her editors declined to comment on the article, which quoted Harley CEO Jim Ziemer and other company executives.
